Are Cheap Pellet Smokers Worth Buying?
Most pellet smokers now a days, at least with all the cool new tech will cost you in the ball park of $1,000 - $1,500.
But are budget pellet smokers worth it if you can't afford that?
Today we look at the Pit Boss Pro Series 850.
Sure, it does not have the new rapid fire igniter, or the VST mode for extra smoke flavor or a big chamber to hold more BBQ.
But can it still make good BBQ? Let's find out...

Thank you for sharing : Like 221 for you : I wish you a wonderful weekend
As someone who knows nothing about grilling I appreciate the curated list! Also awesome for birthdays and fathers day (:
I remember the first video I knew you made was the removal of the bullet button on an S&W M&P. 😅😅😅😅 This is Mike from GD Congratulations brother.
Thanks for emphasizing the comradery that IS the biggest asset of food comps. Congrats on your win. 😊
Got the NOP code fml
How this guy know how old I am lol and i chose both I love history too
You lost me when you recommended spraying a grease fire with water...
Apparently a lot of people had problems with this grill with fires in the hopper. Has this been resolved?
excellent video. well done!
Grill Sergeant…. Does the Titan continuously smoke or does it pause periodically? Also, have you had trouble hooking up to it via wifi like many people are experiencing? This would help my decision a lot.
No need to even test Traeger or Pit Boss pellets, they’re crap. ✌🏼😂
Late to the party as usual, but I brought a dumb question to make up for it: would losing the hopper using a metal cat litter scooper not accomplish the same result of minimizing fines in the hopper?
Yes! And I’ve tried it. 😂 Not as fast but it does get the job done. Thank you for watching! Happy smoking!
What can you spray on rust inside grill? Or leave it alone???
I usually spray cooking oil on the inside of the grill, you really don’t want to paint the inside of a grill.
Pit boss needs to reword all their grills for example: good, better, best. They have way too many grills that have missing features that are extremely hard to narrow down for a buyer. Different control boards, different grate layout and construction. Different sizes, different hoppers, different cleanout designs, searing feature, etc For the average consumer going in to buy one they see grills labeled pro series but then see competition series, then base editions. Onyx, lexington, platinum, titan, sub variants, retailer exclusives. Why dont pro series offer smoke mode? Its absolutely ridiculous 2 grills with the same PID controller or similar and yet pro series skimps out on a smoke mode when your buying a smoker! You gotta in some cases step down and buy the cheaper competition series (prices in several stores) just to get the extra smoke mode or you have to buy a premo model like this to get it. Other brands offer the extra smoke feature on ALL pid controller smokers. Ahhh i hate marketing.
Did you just recommend water for a grease fire?
I bought this smoker in part from the reviews on this channel and it’s been extremely disappointing. It constantly breaks, I’ve replaced controllers, igniters, fans, etc. Basically, I’ve become a pit boss technician. This weekend the pellets smothered the igniter and the fan started running which ignited a full burn point and seems to have broken it for good. Working to get a return authorization from pit boss which has been a horrible nightmare as well. I wish they treated their real customers how they treat their social media influencers. Save your money, buy something else.
Let's advertise as many products as possible. Less advertising and more cooking.
Hmm those screws look like a good target for threadlocker
So…. It’s not a coincidence that I stumbled into this in the year I turned 35…
Try that dawn power wash
Buying a house and looking forward to grilling. I’ve never had a grill. Thanks for the good tips
Thanks for not showing us how to clear the auger.
You cut almost all the fat off that tri-tip. What was behind that decision? Tri-tip is one of my favorites and I always leave a layer of fat on it.
Okay, I have an upright Pitt Boss. Never started it with the door open. I'm assuming this rule applies to the upright ones as well?
Mistake #5: Can I cover the Grease catcher with a layer of Aluminum (Making sure that I do not cover the Sliding cover) to help keep it clean?
Awesome explanation and tips 👏🏽 👌🏽 now I feel like I can smoke some protein with confidence.
Pro tip.......never put water on a grease fire. Close your lid. Starve the fire of oxygen. Is your best bet to save your cook. If you don't care about the cook, then a good ol fire extinguisher rated for grease fire will work.
Grill Sergeant do you have any advice on app issues with our grills?
I liked all of your tips. All good in my view, so no favorites. Great video. Thank you, Sir. Got a Pit Boss for my birthday last week. I'll try not to blow it or my house up.
Beautiful Ribs!!! What gloves do you use and where can you buy them?
I had copper top model and it was a piece of crap. Too many auger door leaks and replacing the auger model
Thanks for the great comparison. I have the 1600CS but have considered the Titan. Just my 2 cents, but there are a couple things that I didn't care for on the Titan. My local academy had a couple on display and both handles to the pellet clean out were broken. Seems cheap compared to the clean out on the CS and PSE. Also, the open sides of the CS and PSE allow easy access to the ash clean out from the side whereas the closed bottom of the Titan makes it a little harder to access...I loved the rack system but wished the racks themselves were a little heavier duty.
NEVER spray water on a grease fire!
About 10 years ago I cooked burgers and hotdogs on one of those (unrestored) for a charity event. The owner offered to give it to me and I said no! What an idiot I was!
Your video should be required viewing for anyone that has a pellet grill . One thing I do to clean out my burn pot is ours after it is shut off I vacuum out all of the dust and ash. I bought a cheap $20 shop vac just for this purpose.
My bigger concern with the bent arms is that you can't shut the air off completely. Thanks for the information.
Burn off is also called seasoning, depending on the brand. I have a Traeger Ironwood 885. Seasoning is part of the instructions. I've had an explosion before on my previous pellet smoker. I neglected to open the door when first firing it up and I had never cleaned it up. Maybe 30 cooks of accumulated ash. I highly endorse regular cleaning of the firebox, accumulated ashes, and any accumulated grease.
35 is not old 😂
Has anyone ever vacuum sealed their meat during rest period instead of wrapping it and throwing it in a cooler??
i wish it was $500 lol USD. $799 CAD onsale. I just bought the 850ps
What’s the best vertical smoker?
An hour to warm up seems excessive…?
Ham
Ham
The biscuit test, I really need to do this
Only a pellet grill guy would inject ribs. LOL...
I also take the time to sift my pellets before adding them to the hopper. This way all the dust is removed and I'm not adding that to the burn. I have a dust bucket and a sifter that fits on top, pour the pellets into the sifter, shake it a bit, and let the debris fall into the bucket. Then I transfer the pellets (sans dust/debris) into another bucket. It's also a great way to blend pellets flavors.
At my age I learned to let my meat rest.
I found this video very helpful! Thank you so much.
